“Resection”

Artist: Nathalie Prenevost
NeuroGrad Collaborator: Mary Taylor

Abstract

This piece was inspired by Mary Taylor's research. This study examined temporal lobe resections in adults with epilepsy.

I chose to incorporate both the surgeon and the patient's perspective in my illustration, although their perspectives are shown in very different ways. My art sought to illustrate the physical process of a lobe resection through a surgeon's view. The alternating black and white images were meant to be reminiscent of a seizure, and the subsequent burst of colour the experience of finally being free of these seizures. This was done in an effort to capture the emotional weight of epilepsy, and the relief that may come from a successful treatment.
